Soft Stamping with KKCenterHk by melaniesfancies

I received this item in exchange for an honest review.

Have you guys heard of soft stamping? Have you tried it yet? I just recently saw these when I was browsing the items I was allowed to pick from for review from KKCenterHk. I thought it looked interesting so I had to try it out. I picked out N.NAIL French Lace Marble Line Pattern Soft Stamping [NNAIL-SPPNGA02].

If you're not familiar with soft stamping, here's what the stamper looks like. On one side, you have pictures of what the stamped image is supposed to look like when all colored in. As you can see, these stampers are supposed to be great for multicolor stamping. On the other side is the actual stamper.  This works quit a bit differently from regular stamping techniques. The stamper is the stamping plate in this case.

I had to do a Web search a few times to even find out how to use this thing :P As usual with KKCenterHk's products, no instructions included.

To use this stamper, you apply the polish directly to the stamper.
Next, you stamp it a couple of times on a piece of paper to remove the excess polish.
Then you use an orange stick or something similar to clean away some of the excess polish around the image.
Lastly, you stamp it onto your nails.

Done! Sounds great, right? This kind of stamper is supposed to have some advantages since it is the stamper. No need for extra supplies like stampers, stamping plates, etc. Additionally, unlike traditional stamping, you can work slower because the polish needs to tack up a bit before you stamp it onto your nails.

I love the idea of this!

Unfortunately... I worked with this off and on for about a week and just could not get the hang of it. My boyfriend blames my poor manual dexterity but I seriously think there's just some trick I'm not getting. Maybe I just need to practise with it more? I don't know.

A couple of things to comment on:

I tried a lot of different polishes with this stamper. My Shany nail art polishes seemed to work pretty well, and made it a lot easier to actually paint in the image because it meant less cleanup. I finally tried my Konad stamping polishes and they definitely worked the best.... I only have a Christmas Konad set so you'll have to pardon my almost Christmas themed manicure :P

The actual process of using this stamper isn't too terrible. I didn't particularly like the extra clean up step. I found that depending on what polish you use, it actually is very possible to work too slowly in which case the polish just dries and won't lift off the stamper. To fix this, I just added another coat of a different color and typically it would lift both colors.

I found it pretty impossible to get clean lines with this stamper. I don't know what the trick is, but it wasn't happening for me.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of my nicer lines, but I did manage to get a few OK stampings. I finally gave up on getting this perfect and I found that I liked using this best by coloring in one color, then doing kind of a background color over top of it.

I started with 2 coats of Dreamy Lacquer Lilac or Lavender? which I'll review for you later this week. I used high contrasting colors just for demonstration purposes. As you can see, another issue with this stamper is that it's kind of hard to get it placed on the nail correctly and cover the entire nail. I'm sure you could do some really cool stuff with it, if you can manage to figure out how to use it properly.

I however haven't, so I mostly just made a mess of it. I did manage to accidentally get some really good stamping in. At least partials. The rest was just a mess and I gave up on trying because I discovered I could do some really cool marble effects using this and I kind of liked that better :P

 See? Accidental marble effect.

So.. can't say I love this stamper. I can see it's potential. Hopefully with a LOT more practise, I can do something really cool with it. For now, that isn't happening. I know this looks like a mess.. but I actually kind of like this look better than picture perfect nails. I'm going to have to keep that in mind for future manicures ;)

If you have any tips for using these kinds of stampers... PLEASE let me know! :)
